Update on A New York Pizza Place

I reported earlier that my husband had tried "A New York Pizza Place" ( http://www.snellsoftware.com/ANewYorkPizzaPlace/) but I hadn't yet. I went there tonight, and it was definitely real, New York style pizza. The crust was thin, you could order by the slice, and the sauce was pleasantly zesty. The only thing that was disappointing was the cheese, which seemed a little low-quality. Overall, though I'd give this an A-.

As one of author's "pizza pals" and a fellow East Coast transplant, I thought I'd report on pizza in the San Diego area:

Bronx Pizza (111 Washington St, San Diego, CA)
This is indeed the best NY pizza I've had outside of the East Coast. It excels on style and taste. The pizza is thin, the sauce has zing, and the grease is spicy. A+ and a "gold star" for having a soda fountain with free refills.

Hoboken Pizza (1459 Garnet Avenue Pacific Beach, San Diego, CA)
Inspired by this blog, I tried this place recently hearing it was "better than Bronx Pizza". I wouldn't say it lived up to that, but it does have authentic NY style pizza. They have good eating area and a fun "east meets west" decor. The overall taste is good. The main shortcoming was the lack of zest. I would have preferred a bit more zip to the sauce and grease, thus I give it an A-.

Regents Pizzeria (4150 Regents Park Row Ste 170, La Jolla, CA)
A UCSD favorite as it sits right next to campus and is walking distance from graduate housing. Their NY style pizza is decent to pretty good depending when you get it and by far beats the nearby "pizza" alternatives (Dominos, Pap Johns, Round Table, blech) . On an absolute scale, due to lacking some zing in the sauce, I'd give it a B+ on average, but it can be an A- on a good day.

NYPD Pizza (6110 Friars Rd Ste 111 San Diego, CA)
The first pizza place I tried in San Diego on the recommendation of a guidebook. The pizza was not NY Style and not very tasty -- very thick and doughy. I would give it a C+. They did have old NYPD car out front that the use for deliveries -- that was cool.

Non NY Style Highlights

Pizza Port (135 N Highway 101, Solana Beach, CA and 571 Carlsbad Village Dr, Carlsbad, CA)
This local hangout is extremely popular as it it both a brewery and pizza place. The one time I went it was impossible to get a table, which are fun long cafeteria-style shared tables. Their pizza doesn't claim to be NY style pizza and it definitely is not, but it's worth mentioning as they serve a tasty "brick oven" style pie. I recommend it for pizza fans in general. I give it an A for taste and a negative gold star for not being NY style.

Leucadia Pizza (7748 Regents Rd, San Diego, CA)
A pretty good brick oven style place. The dough is soft and tasty and not greasy. I'd recommend it if you are in the mood for something different. I'd give it a B+ for taste. They have a few other locations in the area, but I've heard the one on Regents is the best.
